Many animals live in the Southwest region. Different animals live in the grassy prairies, the plateaus and mountains, and desert landscapes. Animals that live in the deserts of the Southwest have adapted to survive hot temperatures and little water.
Animals in Arizona include coyotes, prairie dogs, hummingbirds, scorpions and black bears. Desert animals in Arizona include the javelina or peccary, mule deer, rattlesnakes and Gila monsters. Grassland animals include rabbits, white-tailed deer and antelope. Mountain animals include black bears, elk, bison, and wolves. Many birds migrate to or through Arizona each year.
Texas mammals include white-tailed deer, coyotes, antelope, cougars, black bears, rabbits, squirrels, skunks, raccoons, armadillos and prairie dogs. Texas has a variety of reptiles. Texas has 15 different poisonous snakes. They include coral snakes, copperheads, cottonmouths and rattlesnakes. Texas has the most varied birdlife in the United States. The mockingbird is the state bird.
Wildlife in New Mexico is abundant. Many different animals live in the forested higher elevations. Large mammals in New Mexico include the black bear, mountain lion, mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, bobcat, and cougar. the Mexican Desert bighorn sheep can be found in the mountains. Many different birds live in New Mexico. The roadrunner is the state bird.
Oklahoma's animal population is similar to the Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.
