The most important physical features of the Southeast region are the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont Plateau.
This region has six states that border the Atlantic Ocean- Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The land next to the ocean is the coastal plain. This land is very fertile and used for growing rice, cotton, sugarcane and peaches. Oil is also found in the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
The Piedmont Plateau is inland from the coastal plains. Piedmont means "foot of the mountain" in French. The Piedmont is between the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Appalachian Mountains. There are many beautiful forests, lakes, rivers and streams in the piedmont. There is also fertile farmland in the piedmont.
The Appalachian Mountains are behind the Piedmont. The The Appalachian Mountains are a chain of mountains. The Southeast part of the Appalachians are the Blue Ridge Mountains. Mount Mitchell is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Shenadoah Forest is in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Smoky Mountains are also a part of the Appalachian Mountains. Tourists are attracted to the beautiful scenery. The mountains are covered with trees and rounded at the top. Most of the rivers in the Southeast region flow from the Appalachian Mountains.
The Southeast has many rivers. The three most important rivers are the Mississippi, the Ohio and the Tennessee. The Mississippi River is used to ship goods in and out of the central United States. The Ohio River river is also used to ship goods.
