Physical Features of the New England Region
 
 
The Appalachian Mountains are an important physical feature of the New England region. The Appalachian Mountians have different names in this region. The Green Mountians are in Vermont. Mount Mansfield, one of the Green Mountains, is the highest mountian in Vermont. The White Mountians are in New Hampshire. The highest point in the New England region is on Mount Washington in the White Mountians. Winter sports are popular in the mountains.   
 

The Altantic coast is another important physical feature of the New England region. It is rocky with some sandy beaches. Lighthouses can be seen along the coast of the New England region. They are buildigs that put off light at night and serve as a marker by day. They are used to guide ships sailing in coastal waters.
 

The Connecticut River, which begins in New Hampshire, is the longest river in the New England region. The Connecticut River valley is an important farm area in the New England region. Many of the rivers in the New England region were named by Native Americans. The Connecticut River means "long river" or "long tidal river." Many large cities and towns are along the Connecticut River.
