The New England region is made up of 6 states. The states in the New England region are Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The New England region is located along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the far eastern corner of the United States. The New England region has beautiful landscape. Tourists in this region can see mountains, lakes and rivers, beautiful rocky coastlines, green valleys, quaint towns, rolling farmlands and friendly cities. Most of the important events in America's colonial period took place in the New England region. In 1620, brave men and women from England set sail for America on the Mayflower. They were called Pilgrims. The Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony, the first permanent settlement, in New England.
