Farming in the Middle
Atlantic Region
The soil in the
Middle Atlantic region is rich and fertile. It is one of the nation's
richest agricultural areas. Many farms in the Northeast are dairy farms.
Deleware, Maryland and Virginia are famous for poultry farms. Other farms
grow vegetables for markets in big cities like New York and Boston. They
are called truck farms because farmers take the vegetables right to the
stores or markets. There are hundreds of truck farms in the Middle Atlantic
region. Grapes are an important farm product in New York State. Strawberries
are grown all over the region. In the fall, the farm stands are loaded
with pumpkins, squash, apples, and homemade apple cider.
